Super Eagles Soar to Victory in World Cup Qualifier

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, took a significant step towards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo yesterday.
Striker Victor Osimhen continued his impressive form, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute with a powerful header from a well-placed cross by Samuel Chukwueze. The Napoli star’s goal set the tone for a dominant first-half performance by the home side.
South Africa equalized early in the second half through Percy Tau, but the Super Eagles responded emphatically. Midfield maestro Wilfred Ndidi restored Nigeria’s lead in the 68th minute with a long-range strike, before Kelechi Iheanacho sealed the win with a clinical finish in stoppage time.
Head coach Austin Eguavhoen praised his team’s resilience, stating, “This was a crucial match for our World Cup aspirations, and the players showed great character to secure the three points. We’re not there yet, but this victory puts us in a strong position in our qualifying group.”
The win places Nigeria at the top of their qualifying group with 10 points from four matches. The Super Eagles will look to maintain their momentum when they face Benin Republic in their next qualifier in June.
